Data Studies

Data Studies at ITU is an interdisciplinary research group that takes data as its object of
study. This call for focused research on data is rooted in three recent developments in
technology and society, including 1) deepened large-scale datafication social and
economic life, 2) increased data-driven technologies, and 3) awareness of politics around
data across data value chains and their implications for industries, infrastructures and
nations. Conceptually, we take an inclusive view of data. Empirically, we follow them along
their lifecycle, from how they are sourced and used to the political and ethical questions of
what counts as data and who should govern them. While these questions are usually
studied apart, in separate disciplines with separate vocabularies, this research group aims
to bring them into conversations.
