User Relevance Feedback and Novices: Anecdotes from Exquisitor's Participation in Interactive Retrieval Competitions

User relevance feedback is an important component of the multimedia analytics toolbox. In the Exquisitor project, we have primarily focused on the scalability of user relevance feedback over media collections. We have also, however, developed a proof-of-concept user interface and applied the system in interactive retrieval competitions. In this short paper, we describe the main user interface components of the Exquisitor system, along with anecdotal evidence about their effectiveness, or lack thereof.
