“It doesn’t see the same as humans see”: How Tomorrow’s Farmers Imagine Agricultural Futures

At the current moment, Denmark is developing legislation to regulate or change the role of farming in society as part of the "Green Tripartite" negotiations between agricultural industry, civil society and conservation groups. In the context of this emerging change, we explored how 22 farming school leaders, teachers, and students from 5 different farm schools understand the role of industrial farming in Danish society, how future technologies might affect or expand the role of farmers, and how these participants envision farming futures in Denmark–including their motivations, reflections on how they would like to work and future goals. Based on these, this paper develop implications for the role of design in engaging mainstream farmers in sustainability and the green transition, drawing out how these future farmers envision farming futures and the role of technologies in them.
