This lecture was presented as part of ITU's 'Digital Star' program -- a program that provides public outreach and education to cand.it and other practitioners working within industry.
The first part of the lecture examined the importance of data visualisation and it's role in providing visual explanations of phenomena, citing examples that describe the role of data visualisations in explaining disease outbreaks in the 19th century or how it lead to the 1986 Challenger Space Shuttle disaster. The lecture explained why and how data visualisation could be used to both inform and mislead. The second part of the lecture explained how data visualisation can be used to provide new insights into data, and provide the basic principles and tools of data science and visualisation as applied to image collections and art history.
